Introduction

Online furniture shopping is a fairly new behaviour. Since the average ticket size is significantly more than online shopping for clothes, groceries.. etc, furniture buyers prefer examining the product in person before purchase. This partly explains why furniture startups now have physical experience centres popping up all over the country, and prospective buyers are swarming in.

As part of an interview assignment, I was asked to improve the buying experience on any popular furniture/home decor shopping app. I chose Urban Ladder.

User analysis

Persona

I did a quick research on online shopping behavior. People who shop furniture online gave me quality feedback of their experience. I created 2 personas to better define our users.

Insights

  • Images of furniture photographed in good lightings and perspectives leads user to overlook its actual size and colour.

  • Going to the physical store to experience the furtinure in person helps them verify the quality of the product.

  • There are no options that let a user ‘try out’ furniture at their homes for a short duration. Renting furniture from a service like Furlenco to get a feel before actually buying something similar on Urban Ladder takes weeks before the actual purchase.

Hypothesis and concept

From the insights, I figured that it was likely that a lot of users churn from the app simply because they can’t get an idea of how the furniture will actually look in their home once they buy it. This churn can only be slightly curtailed by easy returns/replacement/trials as the ticket sizes are just too high for Indian households.

In the interest of the assignment timelines, I decided to extend the value of Urban Ladder’s experience centres into the app itself through a new feature. Specifically, I wanted to use AR to solve the problem of helping users spatially visualise how the furniture will fit into their home.
